Medications include benzodiazepines which reduce feelings like panic, agitation, insomnia and irritability. Therapy includes cognitive behavioral therapy where therapists help patients identify negative thoughts and replace them with more positive ones. Other types of therapy are also available including talk therapies in which patients discuss their problems with a professional and mindfulness-based therapies, which focus on bringing the individual’s attention to his or her breathing. My own experience:

I was on a flight from NYC to LA last week when I had the strangest experience. For most of the first half of my trip, I felt perfectly normal but then in mid flight something strange happened – all of sudden I became overwhelmed with anxiety for no reason at all. It started as just a little bit more than what you might feel if you were going through security or sitting on an airplane that is about to take off and suddenly things took a turn for the worse it got exponentially worse until finally there came this point where it felt like every part of me wanted to scream out loud because everything around me seemed absolutely terrifying. This continued throughout much (most?) of the flight and it was a total nightmare.

I didn’t know what to do with myself or how I could get out of this state because Anxiety Anxiety Anxiety Anxiety Anxiety you can see where I’m going with this, yeah? Eventually there came this point where things calmed down just enough for me to pull my thoughts back together and then we landed in LA so that helped too (thank goodness). But now I have anxiety about not being able to make flights anymore! What if something like that happens again?! And why did it happen at all? Yeah.it’s been really hard to shake. It has also made me more aware when other people are anxious around me as well which is nice but still icky because every time someone seems anxious.
