My friend Michael is a man with a plan. He has a really cool plan and has a fantastic method for it. The main idea is to create a little ritual to your daily life that will help you become more aware of what’s going on in your day.
Michael has a really neat way of doing this. He will create a ritual to his morning routine and then he will write it down on a piece of paper. This piece of paper will have a specific word next to it. Michael will then put the word down on a piece of paper, fold it, and then place it under the pillow where he places the letter he created.
This ritual will help Michael become aware of how much he’s missing out on by not exercising his day by doing exactly what he does every day to get ready for his day. A great way to get in a habit of doing what you should be doing everyday.
Michael will then take the paper with the word he placed there and look it over. This will be a reminder to him that he’s on a routine that needs to be broken and then he will then put the letter back under the pillow and he will move on with his day.
When it comes to the ritual, it’s also an opportunity to remind him to exercise a little bit more. In this particular ritual he will take his paper and look at it, then put it back under the pillow. Its not just a little bit cheesy. We have all gotten way too caught up in little things that don’t really matter. We take for granted things that are not important, because they’re easy. But sometimes, it takes a bit of effort to remember to take a moment to really notice those little things. Just recently, I was reading some reviews of a new book and I was surprised to see that the reviewer said he was a bit overwhelmed by the book.
This is the type of thing that I find myself doing from time to time. I’m overwhelmed by things that I don’t really know how to handle, because they’re not that important. But because I’m so focused on those little things, I forget about the bigger picture.
The biggest mistake I see readers make is spending too much time focusing on the minutiae, and not enough time really taking the time to look at the big picture. For example, I recently read a review of a book that I just finished, and it mentioned that certain elements of the book were difficult to digest. I had to put it down to review time but because I was so focused on the details, I forgot to think about the overarching theme.
