The Comely Rule is a simple, yet extremely powerful rule of thumb that states that we are more likely to be more productive when we are more self-aware. This is because we tend to focus more on our actions, rather than the outcomes of our actions.
In the past, we might have looked at a situation and said, “Maybe we should have done this differently.” A little self-awareness would have been helpful in our decision making. It’s now become very clear that we don’t really have to look at our results or the results of our decisions, it’s better to just focus on what we’re doing.
The comey rule came to our attention because we were all working with people who were on our teams for whom we were responsible for. While we all knew, but didn’t always understand, how much we could accomplish if we just applied ourselves more, the comey rule was that we should be more aware of how much we were getting done and how much we could be doing.
We do have a lot to be doing, but it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what we are doing, especially when it comes to getting things done. Sometimes we even feel like we are doing the wrong thing, when in fact we are just doing what was asked of us. In a previous blog post we talked about the importance of creating a “team culture” where people feel valued and they know they can accomplish more if they work together.
In the last blog post we suggested that you set goals for yourself, but then it’s up to you to decide how you get them done. When we made this chart, we decided that we wanted to get more done in the week we were asked to do it. The problem is that, well, you can’t really do the same thing every single day.
That’s one problem with the “comey rule.” What we need is someone to step up and do what is asked of them. We want to create a culture where people feel valued, we want to help people accomplish their goals, and we want people to be able to achieve their dreams. When we look at the chart above, we also see that we’ve already set a goal for ourselves to get more done in the coming week.
This is what comes close to the problem with the comey rule. We started the week with a goal of making sure we did our own little part to help people accomplish their goals. But then we realized we needed to do a little more. In order to help people accomplish their goals, we needed to create a culture where people felt valued, we needed to help people accomplish their dreams, and we needed people to be able to achieve their dreams.
This is the problem with the comey rule. We only care about our own results, and when we’re not helping people, we’re not helping ourselves, so when we say, “I want to be more productive in the coming week,” what we really mean is “I want to have more people think the same thing.” And what we mean by people’s thinking is how we’re performing in our own jobs.
The problem with the comey rule is that it doesn’t work very well. A lot of people think you should spend your time on things that are important to you. However, this is actually a bit of an anti-pattern. Think about it, if you’re really committed to becoming the person you want to be, and if you really want to lead your life the way you want to lead it, it makes sense to be productive in your own job.
I actually think that many people would argue that a job is the last place you should be working on yourself. You tend to get discouraged if you don’t enjoy what you are doing. I mean you wouldnt be doing anything if you didnt enjoy it and you would be bored at the office. However, if you are a productive member of society, you tend to be productive in your work.
